Lot 16: [JOHN WATERS] - COLLECTION OF MOVIE POSTERS

[JOHN WATERS] - COLLECTION OF MOVIE POSTERS
Estimate: $1,200 - $1,500
Description: John Waters (b. 1946) is a film director, journalist, and artist most well-known for his films Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, Cry-Baby, and Pecker. His collaborations with drag queen superstar Divine helped to establish both of them as cult legends that would influence punk rock, independent cinema, and aesthetics from the 1970’s on.

The posters in this lot are some of the earliest and rarest from John Waters legendary second feature film, Multiple Maniacs as well as Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble.

  • Catalog Note: Female Trouble French poster, 1974. (22 x 14 ½ in.) Offset print. One horizontal fold across poster, one small tear on edge but otherwise good condition. Text is in French.

This brilliant full-color poster is for the French release of John Waters’ Female Trouble starring Divine, Edith Massey, David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole, and Cookie Mueller.

Multiple Maniacs poster, 1970. (17 x 11 in.) Offset print. Excellent condition.

Multiple Maniacs was John Waters’ second feature-length film following his 1969 feature Mondo Trasho. This poster is one variant of several in 1970 that lists screening locations in Baltimore. This particular version lists screening dates for April 10th, 11th, and 12th at First Unitarian Church.

Multiple Maniacs poster by Todd Trexler, 1972 (17 x 11 in.) Offset print. Excellent condition.

Multiple Maniacs was John Waters’ second feature-length film following his 1969 feature Mondo Trasho. This particular poster is unique from others as it was designed by prolific San Francisco-based artist, Todd Trexler who did many collaborations with both Divine and The Cockettes. It was designed to promote a 1972 screening of Multiple Maniacs Trexler hosted at The Palace Theatre in San Francisco as part of his Nocturnal Dream Show film series.

Todd Trexler (b.1945 – d. 2014) was a well-known poster artist based in San Francisco who came to prominence in the gay community following the Stonewall riots of 1969. He opened Peaches Dream Galleries in the Castro neighborhood that same year with art dedicated to the expression of gay life and hosted the Nocturnal Dream Shows film series at The Palace Theatre every weekend along with his collaborator, Sebastian. Through Sebastian, Trexler came to know the influential drag troupe The Cockettes and would go on to make posters and print material promoting their shows. This caught the attention of John Waters in Baltimore who introduced The Cockettes and Trexler to Divine, establishing what would go on to be a creative partnership for all parties. His posters became iconic through the 1970’s and helped shape an aesthetic in the Bay Area that became synonymous with the LGBT scene of the Castro.

In the 1980’s, Trexler became an activist and educator working as a nurse and helping patients who had AIDS or were HIV positive, a capacity in which he worked for 30 years. He died on February 9th, 2014.

Pink Flamingos mini film poster, 1973 (16 x 11 in.) Offset print. Great condition.

Pink Flamingos is John Waters most recognized cult-film from the early part of his career. It helped establish both he and Divine as purveyors of filth and anti-heroes in a burgeoning cinema underground. This iconic poster image of Divine in a red fish-tail dress holding a gun is the image probably most synonymous with him.
